Seasonal Musings
September, 2009
Autumn is coming - and it seems to be arriving early this year - at least
in my part of the world.
The official beginning of Fall is the 22nd - marked by Autumn Equinox. Energetically, this
is a balancing act - the daylight and nighttime are roughly equal, and while we are still
harvesting some fruits and vegetables, we are also beginning to think about the coming winter.
In some ways we are sort of straddling summer and winter.
Summer vacations are over, the kids are back in school, we head back to work determined to
make the last quarter of the year profitable, and thinking already of the holiday season to
come. We start putting our summer things away, and taking out and refreshing our colder
weather wardrobes. We rake leaves, put our gardens to bed, seal up chinks in our insulation,
and spend some enjoyable moments engaged in outdoor activities while the weather permits.
As we see plant and animal life around us die back or prepare to hibernate, we may feel
some inward stirrings to reflect a bit.
Why not spend some time in assessment? We can assess ourselves and our situations by
asking ourselves the following questions:
- What do I bring with me into the fall and winter? What will bring me comfort during
the darker and colder seasons?
- What am I leaving behind - what unfinished business, projects, or ideas do I wish to just break with, and declare “done”?
- What do I want to set aside to perhaps pick up later?
- What do I want to work on during the winter season? What deep inner projects will I be developing
inside, just as the earth does her own recycling work unseen under the soil?
I think it's a wonderful time of year - a still point that offers an opportunity to
complete and declare "Done" those things that no longer serve, to say "Oh, I
forgot about that - let me shelve it to pick up later" for those things unfinished
(and sometimes not even started!), and to embrace that which we love.
In simple terms, a fresh start, a reinstated integrity and a clean slate to enter the
next season.
My favourite Essential Oils to support this inquiry are:
Frankincense,
Rosewood
and
German Chamomile.
